3. februar 1959 dør 3 af USAs populæreste sangere, da deres fly styrter ned i Iowa: Ritchie Valens, 17 år (portrætteret i filmen La Bamba), Buddy Holly, 22 år og J.P.Richardson med kælenavnet "The Big Bopper"
Denne hændelse blev udødeliggjort mange år senere (i 1972) med sangen "The Day the Music Died" af Don Mac Lean.
